MY Y Story
I was born and raised in Puyallup and even though there was a Y about five miles from my home, I never knew what the Y was. I thought it was just a gym. I didn’t think I needed a "Gym" because I was involved in so many sports throughout the year. I never knew what I was missing until now.
I worked 15 years at a local restaurant, it consumed my life. I worked 50 hour weeks and spent little time at home and when I wasn’t working, I was too tired to do anything. I was missing out on my family and my kids were growing up right before my eyes. I was unable to attend sporting events, school events. Without ralizing it my family became number two in my life. I was physically and mentally broken and my family was suffering because of that. I knew that I needed a change and I needed it fast. When I heard the Gordon Family YMCA was opening, I decided to apply at this "gym". I took a leap of faith, left the only job I have ever known and on June 8 2015, I worked my first shift as the Member Services Director at the Gordon Family Y. My life changed forever that day. I fell in LOVE instantly! I knew on my first day that my leap of faith was the right move for me and my family. The Y has given me my family back, my children back, my husband back and it gave me myself back. For the first time in a really long time I felt ALIVE again. I finally have the work life balance that I craved to have one day.
The Y puts people first, and it was so refreshing to be with others who shared my values and my passion for community. The people I work with are not just my co-workers they are my second family. The team I work with have helped heal me in every way shape and form. They allow me to be myself and have embraced my family like one of their own. I could not have made this journey without them.
Fast-forward a year and my family is at the Y 5 nights a week doing some sort of activity. I have seen my kids build relationships and grow in more ways than I could have ever imagined. I am so thankful that I get to give my kids the special gift of the Y.
I love working for the Y. I love being able to give back to the one place that gave so much to me. The best part of my job is being able to say YES to people! I have experienced first hand what the Y truly is and I love giving that back to our community. I have seen lives being changed by just being here at the Y. I have heard some amazing stories of how the Y was there when people felt that they have hit rock bottom. I love seeing familes reconnect and helping the community when they need it. The Y is so much more than a place to swim and a place to work out the Y is a place of belonging.
Please consider giving to the Gordon Family YMCA’s annual campaign so we can continue to say YES to our community to provide financial assistance to familes that can't afford the Y, to give foster care children free memberships, to give teens a safe place to go on a Friday night and to help strengthen our community. Any amount big or small helps our cause and the mission of the Y.
For a better you. For a better community. For a better country.
For a better us.™
Thank you again for your generous contribution to the Y.
