For those of you that aren't aware, I have returned to my dance teaching position at the YMCA in Silverdale, WA. Five years ago, my Director Edna Cox and I launched the Progressive Dance Program at the Haselwood Family YMCA. We wanted to offer children in the KITSAP Penninsula an affordable opportunity to participate and share in our love of dance. At the time, classes were offerered on a recreational basis for six week sessions. With Edna's vision, we jumped head first into establishing a yearly cirriculum with a recital each year. Six months later with our 40 dancers, a gymnasium, and two dance instructors (myself included), we succesfully had the first Haselwood Family YMCA Dance Recital. As it goes with the military, I was unexpectedly moved across the country leaving the budding program. When I returned four years later, I am still amazed by the growth of the program. We have over 200 dancers, 7 instructors, and a theater for our performance this June! We also launched our first Haselwood Dance Company!
None of this would be possible without the contributions during our annual campaign. 1 in 5 of our dancers in the program currently receives some level of financial assistance directly provided by the annual campaign. Considering our class sessions run at $25 per session, most of our students are truly in need. I see the benefits of this campaign daily in the student leaders of our dance community.
This is a community that allows me to return with open arms to share my love of the arts with anyone that can make it through the doors. I am truly humbled by the progress of my students and the dedication that they exhibit no matter their circumstances.
For a better us.™
Thank you again for your generous contribution to the Y.
